Like many others, one of my favorite times of the year is Christmas. It is a time for family, friends and food. Oh my gosh—the food! Our family loves to eat and we have many “must haves” on the holiday menu each year: cut-out cookies, almond-bark pretzels (personal favorite), my great grandma’s famous oyster stew, smoked ham and turkey … mmm. Yes, it truly is the merriest time of the year.
However, as I count my blessings (and all the aforementioned calories), I can’t help but feel a little guilty. Not because my resolution to eat healthier has failed before it has started, but because I know that I am fortunate. I know there are many others right here in South Dakota that don’t have the happiest of holidays because they are hungry. One out of every eight individuals in South Dakota don’t have enough to eat and it is significantly higher for children under the age of 18. One in five children in South Dakota go without food at some point during the year. This is why Lawrence & Schiller has partnered with Feeding South Dakota—to bring much needed food and personal items to those in our community most in need.
Each of our 70 employees has been asked to Feed the Need, Fill the Tree by donating a non-perishable, unopened item of food to the cause. Our volunteer group created a promotion for the effort complete with posters, social media posts and emails. Borrowing from the Angel Tree concept, we also created easy shopping lists that could be taken and used as reminders for all of us as we run errands and finish our holiday grocery shopping.
After three days, we have already exceeded our goal of 100 lbs. of food! Our food drive has five more days to go, and we are hoping to double our donation to Feeding South Dakota.
As you and yours reflect on the good this year has brought, consider giving back to those in need this holiday season. If you have food or personal items you’d like to donate to Feeding South Dakota, feel free to stop by our L&S offices and drop off your gifts by noon on Tuesday, December 23rd. We’ll deliver all donations to Feeding South Dakota that afternoon. As our team has learned, even the smallest contribution can add up to a big difference.
