Five Reasons I’ve Stayed 20 Years 

Statistically, I shouldn’t be here.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median length of time workers in the United States have been at their current job is 4.2 years.

How then do you explain someone staying at the same job for 20 years?

It isn’t a rhetorical question. As of February 17, I’ve been a part of Lawrence & Schiller for 20 years. Two decades! That’s almost as long as some of my co-workers have been alive.

Reaching this milestone is forcing some serious introspection. Why have I stayed in one place so much longer than the typical American worker? Am I lazy? A loser? Or just lucky?

I’ve come to realize there isn’t a single reason why I’ve spent 20 years at L&S. There are many. Here are my top five.

  1. Leadership
  2. It all flows from the top down – values and vision, tone and tempo, opportunities and attitudes. If you’re on the same mission, the foundation is set for long-term employment.

    The founders of L&S, Craig Lawrence and Paul Schiller, set the standard when they launched the agency in 1976: a commitment to quality work that delivers measurable results, a constant drive for innovation and a dedication to community involvement. Today, Scott Lawrence, John Pohlman, Mark Glissendorf, Dan Edmonds and a talented group of young leaders continue to raise the bar and keep our eyes on the horizon.

  3. Colleagues
  4. If it’s true that we’re known by the company we keep, then I have benefited immeasurably being around the smart, creative, funny, passionate people of Lawrence & Schiller. They’ve made my work much better and my days more fun.

  5. Culture
  6. It goes far beyond the curious collection of kitsch scattered around our building… the horse head with orange glasses, the jackalope smoking a pipe and a piñata-riding gorilla. It’s more than team outings and company parties. Those are all great, but the culture of L&S goes much deeper.

    The words on the wall of our lobby say it best: “Passionate. Relentless. Impactful.” We care deeply about doing it right, we won’t give up when it gets hard, and we are determined to make a difference. This is how I want to live my life – at work and at home.

  7. Change
  8. My role at Lawrence & Schiller has shifted many times in 20 years. From broadcast producer to director of interactive services to vice president of public relations, I’ve probably gone through a dozen titles. Each one felt like a new job.

    The variety of roles, the challenges of new assignments, the rapid emergence of new technologies and the evolution of our industry have all combined to keep it fresh and keep me at L&S for two decades.

  9. Clients
  10. Great clients open the door to great opportunities. Our clients are business leaders from whom I’ve learned so much. The tougher the assignment, the more I’ve grown as a professional. Our clients have fueled the agency’s engine and made 20 years of employment a possibility.

How long you stay with a company is a personal choice. The urge to explore something new can be very attractive. Sometimes moving on is absolutely the best decision. And sometimes, the best adventure is the one you’re already on.
