Case Study

CFL Charlie

Situation:

In an effort to help children learn how to be more energy efficient and socially responsible, Touchstone Energy Electric Cooperatives sought a cartoon spokesperson that would teach kids how to be a “super energy saver.” Touchstone wanted to drive home the importance of saving energy, as well as showcase the money saving benefits of cutting energy consumption.

Drawn to look like a CFL light bulb, the character began educating school children about energy and money savings.

Solution:

The character would be modeled after “Ed The Energy Expert” developed by Lawrence and Schiller for East River Electric, a South Dakota Touchstone Energy Co-op. Lawrence & Schiller, along with the national Touchstone Energy business development team, developed ”CFL Charlie.” Drawn to look like a CFL light bulb, this energy awareness character began educating school children about energy and money savings through a series of fun activities and games.

As part of this campaign, a CFL Charlie costume was made to travel to schools and other public events across the country to help spread awareness of the new “Super Energy Saver” program. Work also included web/flash animation, voiceover work and collateral development, including a school kit complete with activity sheets, folders and teacher resource materials.

Results:

With the help of CFL Charlie, Touchstone Energy was able to reach out to hundreds of children, and through them their families, successfully raising energy awareness
